How Insurance works with Campers4All

There are 2 main options available to you as an owner to insure hirers on your motorhome or campervan for the duration of the rental period.  These take the form of an annual Self Drive Hire policy or a Temporary \ Daily Drive Hire agreement and there are distinct differences between the two.  Thankfully Campers4All can explain the key elements of each here to help you choose the option that’s right for you.

What are the different insurance types?

And what are the benefits and drawbacks of each?

Self Drive Hire Insurance

Annual Self Drive Hire

Annual Self Drive Hire is by far the simplest way to ensure that you and anyone else who wants to drive your vehicle as part of a hire agreement are insured.  This policy is taken out annually and replaces your standard insurance with a Self Drive Hire agreement.

The key advantages of this type of policy are :

  • Hirers are automatically insured on your vehicle and therefore you don’t need to setup a separate insurance policy for each rental you take on your van.
  • There are no additional costs to pay for with each rental and therefore you take home more rental income.
  • It is simpler, less time consuming, the handover process is much quicker and you don’t need to hirer present to complete any additional forms.
  • It can worker out cheaper than Temporary Drive Hire insurance depending on how many bookings you take on your van throughout the year.

The drawbacks of using this type of policy are :

  • This type of insurance policy will generally cost between £1300 and £1900 and this is paid irrespective how many hires you have on your van.

Temporary Insurance (Daily)

Temporary or Daily Drive Hire insurance can be thought of as a “Pay as You Go” type model and is taken out on each hire to insure the driver on your vehicle for the duration of the rental agreement.  This is calculated by the day \ hour and is often preferred to annual self drive hire for those who are either new to renting or are looking to only take a few bookings throughout the year.

The key advantages of this type of policy are :

  •  No large annual fees to pay
  • Pay insurance only for the hires that you have taken on your motorhome or campervan.
  • Works out cheaper than annual Self Drive Hire insurance if you are only taking relatively few bookings on your van throughout the year.
  • Breakdown cover is often included in the temporary policy

The key drawbacks of this kind of policy are :

  •  The policy needs to be filled out with each hire and therefore increases the handover time.
  • You will need some key information from the hirer before completing the policy request.
  • You earn less per hire as insurance is paid for every trip.

Which Insurance Type is best for me?

When assessing which insurance type is best, it depends on a number of factors.  Financially, it will depend on the number of hires you intend having on your van.  As general rule, if you are taking more than 5 hires per year, you are better off with an annual Self Drive Hire policy.  Remember this policy also replaces your standard insurance policy as well.

Operationally, it is also much simpler to have a Self Drive Hire policy as you aren’t dependent on information from the hirer and it saves time during the handover.

If you are new to renting however and want to test the waters, a temporary insurance policy may well be the best option for you.  There no harm in using this policy for the first few hires and then switching to an annual policy when you are further into your Campers4ll journey and have a better understanding of what to expect.

As always, feel free to drop us a mail at admin@campers4all.com or use the Contact Us form and we can go through the options with you.
