Winter Campervan Adventures
Embracing the Outdoors Beyond Summer
Many people tend to associate outdoor holidays exclusively with summer, believing that unpleasant weather in other seasons spoils the experience. However, my own years of winter campervan travel have shown that, while it might not appeal to everyone, it can be equally memorable and enjoyable. The unique charm of a winter trip lies in the contrast: as rain and cold envelop the world outside, you remain snug and warm inside your campervan.
Quiet Roads and Cosy Evenings
Throughout my travels, I've discovered the pleasure of exploring destinations during winter, when the usual crowds are absent and tranquillity reigns. For many years, while working abroad and returning periodically to the UK, I made my campervan my base. I began with a 1996 Hymer B664, later upgrading to an Auto Trail Arapaho, and eventually to a Marcia—the Mercedes Sprinter. With my house rented out and my van stored in Sussex, near my family home, each return journey became an opportunity for adventure.
Family Adventures: Snow Hunting
Before flying home, I would reach out to my children, all living in the Scottish Borders at the time, to see who fancied joining me for a winter expedition—what we called "snow hunting." Driving north from Sussex, I would collect whoever was available, and together we would venture further north in search of snow. These trips, mainly taken during the winter months, offered a sense of cosiness and togetherness that I cherished.
Simple Pleasures on the Road
Days were spent exploring new surroundings, braving the elements outside, while evenings were reserved for comfort and relaxation. There is something special about settling down at night with a hot pot simmering on the stove, a steaming mug of hot chocolate in hand, and the choice of a good book or a favourite DVD. The soothing sounds of wind and rain outside only added to the atmosphere, and if snow was falling, it brought an extra thrill to our travels.

The Real Joy of Winter Campervanning
The truth is, it’s all about the experience: the company you keep, the sights you take in, and the activities you enjoy while you’re away. Just as a summer shower never spoils a well-deserved holiday, a bit of winter rain shouldn’t dampen your spirits either. In fact, winter breaks can be every bit as enjoyable as their summer counterparts and often provide a refreshing change. Activities such as sledging add to the seasonal fun, making winter escapes a delight in their own right.
