Campervans - Wonders of Winter

People often think of an outdoors holiday as a summer only activity, that the miserable weather conditions ruin the enjoyment. I’ve seen many winters in my campervans and I’m here to tell you, whilst it might not be for everyone, it can be just as great of a time.

Winter in the campervan has a special feel, its wet and cold outside, yet there you are, warm and snug on the inside. Sure, like I said, it’s not for everyone but from my experience I have travelled to many places without the hustle and bustle.

For many years I worked overseas, returning every few months to the UK. I had rented out my house and originally had a 1996 Hymer B664 as my base, and later upgraded to an Auto trail Arapaho, then onto a Marcia, the Mercedes Sprinter.

Before I flew back, I would contact my kids and see which one of them was available to go on an adventure, “snow hunting”. They all, at the time, lived in the Scottish Borders. My van was in storage in Sussex this was because my dad, Sister and my house was in the area. After a couple of days, I would drive north, mostly in the winter months pick up the available kid, off we would go, further north to hunt for Snow.

It was the cosiness that I enjoyed, during the day we would venture out and explore the area. In the evenings, with a hot pot on the stove, cup of hot chocolate, and a book or DVD. We would settle down, soothing sounds from outside, wind, rain then the added excitement if it snowed.

The truth is, it’s about the experience, who you take with you, what you see and the things you do whilst your away and just like when it rains in the summer, you don’t let the rain ruin your time away. Winter breaks are just as much fun and can be a nice change to the usual summer breaks, enjoying winter activities like sledging.
